Aquavit (Scandinavian spelling: Aquavit) means "Water of Life", a term coined during the thirteenth century in Italy.  Other cultures have spirits with similar names such as "Eau de Vie" and "Aqua Vitae".   Aquavit has its own distinct combination of flavors - generally from aromatic seeds and spices such as caraway, fennel, cumin, anise, and coriander.  This spirit is distilled from grain or rectified potato spirit.  Sweden is generally considered the world's foremost producer of aquavit, often called "snaps" in that country.
